My name is Amy and I am a history teacher based in Brooklyn, NY. I'm now in my 10th year as a history educator, and have more than four years of AP history tutoring under my belt. I spent six years as a middle school history teacher, and transitioned to teaching AP courses in 2019. In my current professional role, I teach world history and politics at an independent school in Manhattan. In 2016, I became a distinguished teacher with Achievement First, a public charter school organization, in recognition of a record of instructional excellence and strong relationships with students and families. I have taught both AP World History and AP US History, and am certified as special education Highly Qualified in the State of New York. I also participated in an AP World History training in 2015 as part of my development. What my students love about me: Besides the content expertise, I am invested in getting to know my students as learners. Every lesson begins with a check-in to gauge how we're feeling (and that means generally! not just in school!), followed by an opportunity to review and set goals for the week. I believe so much of our development as learners comes down to our mindsets about our ability to learn, so my approach emphasizes retrieval practice to help students learn how to self-assess their own understandings. My students tell me I often fill in the gaps where their teachers aren't teaching to a high standard. As such, my students gain confidence in their work and come to enjoy studying history and preparing for their exams.
