Ever since I was a young child, I have always had an interest in patterns, numbers, and mathematics. I’m convinced that my passion for math began when I played with my LEGO set as a toddler and would explore questions like “how many smaller 3-peg pieces will it take to match the larger 12-peg piece?” That interest, curiosity, and passion led me to continue asking questions, exploring patterns, and never being satisfied until I felt I completely understood WHY the patterns behaved in the way that they did.
Beginning in the 5th grade I was recognized for my mathematical abilities when I scored a 100% on the state level exam. I actually got my first tutoring job helping my classmate when I was in the 6th grade (11 years old) - I was paid $6.25 per hour - big bucks! That was a transformational experience for me because it was no longer good enough for me to understand the concepts, I needed to create experiences to help someone else with a different learning profile come to that same level of understanding. I made my own worksheets by hand, I corrected my classmate’s work, and in helping her overcome her challenges and build her confidence I had found one of my life’s passions. From that point on, I knew I wanted to be a math teacher.
Throughout high school and university I continued to study mathematics and engage in opportunities to help others learn. I was a peer tutor, I volunteered at the math center, I did weekly learning support for community children while in University, and in 2009 I got my first teaching job in New Jersey. Since then, I have accumulated over ten years of experience teaching Math (everything from 5th grade to AP Calculus!), integrating technology into the classroom, private and small-group tutoring (both in-person and remote), and training teachers (in-person and remote) to use education technology to improve student outcomes and to make learning more engaging and fun. Most recently I was the math department chair, and now the director of distance learning, at the Friends Seminary School in Manhattan, NYC.
