Bio
I am a dedicated educator and my journey began as a Special Education Teacher in the New York City Department of Education. In this role, I navigated both Integrated Co-Teaching (ICT) and self-contained settings across grades K-5. This hands-on experience not only developed my skills as a novice teacher, but also instilled in me a profound understanding of the unique needs of students with special needs. Working closely with Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) became a cornerstone of my approach, allowing me to tailor instruction to the specific goals and requirements of each student.
Transitioning into my current role as a national and international Literacy Consultant at Teachers College Advancing Literacy (formerly known as Teachers College Reading and Writing Project), I have had the privilege of extending my impact both locally in and beyond New York City. This position has allowed me to contribute to literacy initiatives on a global scale, working with educators and institutions to elevate literacy practices. Additionally, I have been able to hone my skills as a coach and facilitator of adult learning, supporting teachers in implementing and exploring revolutionary and new practices and pedagogy.
At the core of my expertise lies a deepening knowledge of phonological/phonemic awareness and phonics instruction. This focus has been pivotal in my work in schools and empowering educators to cultivate strong foundational skills in their students. The ability to bridge theory and practice has been a constant thread, ensuring that evidence-based strategies seamlessly integrate into the dynamic classroom environment.
Central to my professional philosophy is a firm belief in the power of culturally responsive instruction. I strive to empower educators and schools to create inclusive learning environments that celebrate diversity, foster equity, and embrace inclusion. In my work at TCAL, I have worked with educators to support them in also embracing the critical importance of this in schools with young learners.
One of the most fulfilling aspects of my role is the opportunity to provide instructional coaching and support. I engage with teachers and schools, guiding them through transformative processes aimed at reshaping instructional practices. My approach is collaborative, recognizing that true change emerges from collective efforts. Together, we navigate the challenges and triumphs of educational reform, with a shared commitment to nurturing the potential within each learner.
