I am an international, creative thinker and lover of art, culture, history, film and academia. I am originally from Cuba, but my family immigrated to Europe when I was seven years old. I grew up in London, Geneva, and Spain before moving to Los Angeles to attend UCLA. I have a BFA degree from UCLA from the school of Theater, Film and Television, with a double minor in Chicano/a Studies and African American Studies. During my time at UCLA I ran an arts-outreach program called the Soze Project, where I led a team of tutors, and we brought Arts to under-funded LAUSD schools. Through this program we worked primarily with fifth graders. I also ran a Saturday program (also through the Soze project) where we took a delegation of at-risk youth on a cultural exchange trip to South Africa with the support of Equal Opportunity (non-profit). During my time at UCLA, I was also a docent at the Hammer Museum, teaching art history to children from K-12. And lastly, during my time as a student at UCLA, I was invited to the World Social Forum in Brazil where I taught creative writing workshops, and served as Spanish-English/English-Spanish translator for the different panels and events. After graduating (2005), I had created a performance lecture around culture, social justice and identity that became the "best-selling act in the University circuit". I have performed and facilitated workshops at over 1000 colleges and universities all over the United States. From 2012-2015 I attended CalArts where I pursued two MFA degrees simultaneously. During my time at CalArts I was the TA for all screenwriting courses, I was also the CalArts Library Writing Center tutor, and I ran the CalArts students with disability program through which I tutored all the students with disabilities in all their course work, including life-skills, study skills, work applications, course work and more. After graduating from CalArts I was offered a full time position as the head of the Students with Disabilities program at CalArts but I turned it down because I moved to Atlanta. During my time in Atlanta I taught Creative Writing and Screenwriting at Emory University. In Atlanta I also became the tutor of a prominent Saudi Arabian family and I worked with all of the students in their family. I tutored three students through college (and worked with them on all their course work), helped them with their transfer essays, scholarship essays, and every subject. They went from hating school and getting Ds and Fs, to loving school and graduating with As and Bs. In the same family I worked with a student who had severe traumatic brain injury. I was part of his core recovery team. I was in charge of his re-education. I worked alongside his therapists, doctors, psychiatrist and parents, to come up with a bespoke curriculum to meet his needs. I am proud to say he went from barely being able to comprehend a sentence, to graduating college (7 years later). In 2021, I phased out of tutoring, and I was in charge of finding his next tutor and training her to take over my position. Since 2021 I have continued to do workshops at universities, colleges and high schools all over the country, most recently I taught a film workshop at the WarnerBros Annual High School Conference. I am now looking to get back into tutoring. I am enthusiastic, have a strong work ethic and LOVE education and academia. Everytime I learn anything new I can feel my life becoming enriched and more full. I bring my joy of learning to my students, and get them excited about school. I don't look to get them to just memorize answers so they can pass a test, I look for ways to fall in love with what they are learning by making it relevant, relatable and fun. The result is that students tend to get excited about the work, and begin to enjoy studying and learning, this also builds their self-confidence, and empowers them as they go on beyond our time together. I love teaching and have been doing it for over 18 years.
