BS, I hold a Bachelors from Johns Hopkins University, where I studied Applied Mathematics and Neuroscience.
My name is Serena. I hold a Bachelors from Johns Hopkins University, where I studied Applied Mathematics and Neuroscience. I have been tutoring 1-1 for 8 years now, helping to prep students for their exams: ISEE, SSAT, SHSAT, PSAT, SAT, and ACT. I also tutor students in a plethora of mathematical subjects. I first stumbled upon tutoring in high school, and realized how incredibly rewarding it is. Not only do I value the feeling of sharing my knowledge to help another student, but also, I value the connections I make with my students. In many situations, the "one size fits all" approach is effective, however, in teaching, I find it detrimental. I enjoy the art of tutoring as a creative process. Using my background in Neuroscience, I learn how my students retain information and I tailor my sessions to their needs, while simultaneously helping them gain confidence and learn to love math a bit more. Additionally, I implement the Socratic process, which involves the students in their tutoring sessions, encouraging them to ask questions to help build a greater understanding of the materials and helping them retain the materials for longer durations. Understanding the concepts required for exams, such as the SATs, is important but being familiar with the exam’s style and test- taking strategies are just as important. SAT math is tested differently compared to that of a school math exam. While a school math exam requires advanced math skills and complex formulas, the SAT only requires simple concepts. However, SAT math is “dressed up” to look complex and daunting. Having had many years of experience tutoring, I know the tricks and traps of the questions, and am able to teach my students how to effectively approach these types of problems. Even for students who are not as comfortable with mathematics, I am able to show them a backdoor method to getting the correct answers. All of my students have noticed significant improvement in their scores. If you decide to continue with me, I will work with you until you achieve your desired score.
